The West Valley Detention Center, also known as the San Bernardino County Jail, is a large center that houses up to 3,347 inmates at a time. A busy center, between 50,000 and 60,000 inmates make their way through the facility each year. Most of the inmates at the West Valley Detention Center are pre-trial and are awaiting sentencing. For this reason, many of them could probably be released if they are able to meet the required bail.

As one of the larger jails in San Bernardino County, the West Valley Detention Center offers many services including medical and mental health care to its inmates. Additionally, training programs, a library, recreational opportunities and more are also available to inmates.

Driving Directions

The West Valley Detention Center is easily reached from Interstate 15 or Interstate 10. Once you’ve reached Rancho Cucamonga, look for an exit to Fourth Street or N. Etiwanda Avenue. There are entrances to the detention center via either of these streets. Parking is available at the facility.

Nearby, you can find a Walmart, Costco, fast food chains, Starbucks and other businesses.

Visiting Information

There is free parking available at the facility. When you arrive for your visit, make sure you head to the visitor’s center first.

There is a formal procedure you need to follow before your visit. First, you need to know what visiting privileges your loved one has. Most inmates can see visitors between 8:30 am and 9pm Wed – Sat. High security inmates, however, can only receive visitors on the weekends. Inmates who are located in segregated protective custody can see visitors from Wed to Fri. These restrictions don’t apply to clergy or legal counsel.

Before visiting, you must call ahead. The rules say you must call one day in advance. The phone lines are open from 8 am to 5 pm. The number to call is (909) 887-0364.

Up to 6 visitors are allowed to see the same inmate. Each visit is allowed to last a maximum of 20 minutes. Visitors are only allowed to bring a car key and ID into the visit session with them. The ID is required in order to enter the facility. Approved government issued ID include: California Driver’s License, US passport, California ID card, alien registration card or a US military card.

If you have an outstanding warrant or are on parole, you may be checked upon entering the jail. Any violations of the law may result in your arrest.
